Rank/Rate when Onboard: QM3   Dates Onboard: Sept. '61 - Mar. '64
Current Home Town: Albuquerque, NM
Something about Me:
Returning to San Diego from Yokusoka in late May of '63, we encountered Typhoon Polly with peak winds of 80 mph and barometer below 980 millibars.
Seas were very heavy and confused, the sky was black and our heading was needless to say, variable.
Having the midwatch as quartermaster of the watch, we noted green water hitting the bridge windows, allowing salt water to flood the bridge floor. We took a bad roll (broached?) to starboard, the clinometer reading 48 degrees. It seemed to take a long time coming back. Commander Barnes, the XO and OOD said "I probably shouldn't tell you guys this, but when we left the FRAM yards in San Diego, we were only redesigned to take a 38." Needless to say, the helmsman, the two lookouts and I all felt we had escaped Davy Jones' locker by a very small margin.

Current Home Town: Phoenix, AZ
Something about Me:
Reported aboard Aggie in Feb 1967 to OI Division. OI had a great crew: Pete Spongberg, Manzy Boatright, Bob Stedham, Byron Hoffman, Mac Ewing, Mel Provost, Dwight Brown, Don Baldwin, and Chief Ryder.
Does anyone knows whereabouts of Byron Hoffman, Mike Fallentine or Alvin Hart. Mike, Byron, and I shared a house on Pacific Beach after the '67 WestPac.
Alvin Hart used to crash at our place. He got us into trouble with the MC gang Pall Bearers when he started dating one of their women at the Cave Bar.
Agerholm deployed in Dec 1968 to WestPac again returning Aug 1969. I took 2 weeks leave in Australia to visit my Grandmother, Aunt, Uncle, and cousins in Perth Western Australia.
I met the ship in Aukland NZ and headed back to San Diego. I mustered out of the Navy back to civilian life in Chicago two weeks after we arrived back in SD.

Something about Me:
I Reported aboard Agerholm from the Great Lakes as an FA on 23 August 1966. After 6 months in the Engine Room I convinced a reluctant XO to let me out of the hole. That maneuver gave me back to back mess cook duty before joining the Deck Force. Prior to the 69 deployment I struck for GM ending up as Mount Captain for MT 51. Upon completion of the deployment on 2 February 1970, I received a Nixon 120 day early out. For 44 months and two West Pac Deployments DD 826 was home.

Started in the After Engine Room and was moved to Main Control. Remember having to clean oil coolers on the TG's when we went to Stockton to be a visit ship. Had to hand crank the SSTG Lube Oil pump in the After engine room to get it back on the line. Remember the berthing compartment flooding when the eductor got plugged by a sea shell on the trip up to Stockton. Remember replacing the HP (?) turbine bearing in Subic, only to have it go up in smoke on the first back bell and having to pull right back into Subic. Remember Mounts 51 and 52 flooding when we lost the air to the mounts. Jimmy Susalla... Hulio... The ex Nuc that jammed a screwdriver into his thigh to get out. Monte.. FanTail parties, etc.

Had some good times while on board. 2 Westpac cruises. Some time off Vietnam. I remember that Russian Trawler that was shadowing us. The Skipper ordered us to eat Ice Cream and used the cylinder containers to built a couple missiles on the Fantail Loader Trainer during the night. When the sun came up the Russians were out on deck looking us over with binoculars. Fooled them good.
